Cannabis Health & Research Initiative

The National Cannabis Study

About the Study
The National Cannabis Study (NCS) is a collection of firsthand experiences with medicinal cannabis among individuals with various health conditions. These personal accounts have the potential to inform medical decisions and industry investment.
The purpose of the NCS is to gather new information about the health outcomes of medicinal cannabis from people who use it.

Who Can Participate?

The NCS will enroll participants who plan to use cannabis but have not yet started cannabis use. The Study’s success relies on users’ willingness to share their experience through secure online surveys that take approximately 30 minutes.

The survey will include questions related to mental and physical health, functioning, quality of life, and use of medications (including cannabis and cannabis derived products). Some participants will also be invited to complete surveys using an app on their phones or have blood tests done to measure changes in health.

If you are planning to begin using cannabis for medicinal purposes, with or without the guidance of a medical professional, you likely qualify for participation. Consider participating when the Study opens in early 2024.

Why Should You Participate?

Thousands of firsthand experiences with medicinal cannabis will become part of the National Cannabis Study. These responses will be reviewed and analyzed by researchers in a variety of fields interested in learning more about how cannabis affects health. The resulting body of research has the potential to impact best practices in healthcare and the cannabis industry.

Who’s Behind the NCS?

The NCS is part of the Cannabis and Health Research Initiative, a collaboration between two organizations with years of experience in medicinal cannabis research: Johns Hopkins University and Realm of Caring. Together, they’re building a registry of medicinal cannabis use and outcomes that will inform current and future cannabis research, policy and best practices.

All study procedures are subject to oversight by the Institutional Review Board (IRB) of the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and covered by a certificate of confidentiality (CoC).
